The production chief of the MCU had told Variety that it’s time the MCU featured a gay superhero. She hinted at the possibility in a press scrum at the Captain Marvel Premiere.
The speculation surrounding a gay superhero ramped up in the MCU and specifically, its upcoming film Eternals, began after reports spread that Marvel was looking to cast an openly gay man as the film’s main protagonist. After 2018’s success with Black Panther as the first flagship film for the MCU with a black lead, and this month’s Captain Marvel highlighting a female lead, LGBTQ representation in the MCU seems like the next logical step.
In the brief conversation, Victoria Alonso didn’t confirm whether Eternals had established the film’s protagonist, but it seems that the company is looking for a more diverse cast.
