While Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy movies were rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence, the upcoming Hellboy earned an R rating from the MPAA in February, which intellectual property creator Mike Mignola promised when he announced the film in 2017. Lead actor David Harbour elaborated this prior to the initial trailer reelase, ensuring fans on a faithful adaptation.

That gore is on display almost instantly in the Red Band trailer, as the gun-toting, cigar smoking anti-hero joins up with the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) to defeat the Blood Queen (Milla Jovovich)

The cast of the quasi-superhero film is rounded out by are Ian McShane (American Gods) as Trevor Bruttenholm, Sasha Lane (American Honey) as Alice Monaghan and Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) as Ben Daimio (a role that was recast after Ed Skrein stepped away after claims that the role was being whitewashed).

Hellboy hits theatres on April 12th, 2019.
