Empire’s Jussie Smollett was indicted by a Chicago grand jury today on 16 felony counts.
Smollett was charged in February with felony disorderly conduct and released on $100,000 bail.
The actor reported to Chicago PD in late January that he was attacked by two men who yelled racial and homophobic slurs at him. The police department’s investigation showed that the actor staged this attack.
Smollett’s lawyers stand behind him stating he is nothing but a “victim to a hate crime.”
The actor is due back in court on May 14th for the disorderly conduct charge.
