Previously it was reported that James Gunn is in early talks to helm Warner Bros.’ planned sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad, entitled The Suicide Squad.

Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will not be a direct follow-up to the critically panned David Ayer film, but rather a soft reboot.

The Suicide Squad may feature a few returning cast members, but the bulk of the ensemble will be new. Along with a new cast, a new direction is in the pipeline similar to previous James Gunn directed films Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy.

The move to announce Gunn seems to be a logical one, as Gunn was already writing the script for the sequel, which Warner Bros. announced to release in August of 2021.

Gunn seems to have landed on his feet after Disney fired Gunn from his Marvel franchise in July after old tweets from 2008 and 2009 resurfaced in which he made controversial jokes.

Charles Roven and Peter Safran will produce the Gunn helmed film, and former DC director Zack and Deborah Snyder are acting as executive producers.
