Nerds rejoice! It is finally that time of year where we can cosplay our favourite characters, get our memorabilia signed by the creators, and get hyped for what the future has in store for our entertainment: SAN DIEGO COMIC CON 2018 IS UPON US!! We here at Nerdy Scoop understand that a plane ticket to San Diego alone is pricey, so we got you covered right from the comfort of your home! We’ll shine light on your FOMO all week for coverage and highlights of the biggest announcements at this year’s Comic Con!

Marvel who? With Disney’s decision to pull the MCU away from Comic Con this year, DC and Warner Bros. had the upper hand, and they took advantage of this opportunity! Warner Bros. OWNED Hall H today, and possibly won San Diego Comic Con 2018. We got trailers and teasers from EVERYTHING DC has to offer from the DCEU, DCTV, and DC Comics, as well as trailers for 2014’s Godzilla sequel and the next entry in the Fantastic Beasts series. Don’t worry, we also have announcements from Netflix and RZA to balance things out towards the end of the article.

Game over! DC could’ve just made their showcase this 3 minute trailer, then left. DC has gotten some critique of being too “dark and gritty” and when they aren’t dark and gritty, it doesn’t sit well (Batman in Justice League, the entire Suicide Squad movie). This however, is perfect! Shazam! looks like a promising start from DC in the 2019 year, considering they have to go toe-to-toe with Avengers 4 and this film looks like a light-hearted good time that may attract viewers, since even the MCU got pretty “dark”. Zachary Levi is making the haters spin on their heads as he looks amazing in his one piece suit and cape, and captures the youth and essence of a young teen.

Okay, that’s not the Aquaman trailer, I’m just trying to give you to whole Hall H experience. This is just sooooooo cute and watch worthy! Now….

I’ll admit, I wasn’t too stoked for this movie, but this trailer did its job! I might actually crack open my chocolate advent calendar in November to align the big chocolate with the film’s December 21st release! We got a great look at a humbler Aquaman as opposed to Justice League, Mera, and an extremely awesome but brief look at Black Manta in full! Those glowing red eyes on the helmet is 100!!! We just hope that the graphics are still a work in progress, and will be perfected by December. I mean come on DC! Is this Detective Comics Extended Universe’s Aquaman or 2005 Sharkboy?

As I said before, DC is notorious for being darker and grittier than the opposing Marvel properties. The way things are shaping up however, they may be taking a lighter approach to the DCEU. The comics have already started getting lighter with the New 52 series having lighter colours and cleaner graphics on the page. But what about the guilty pleasure of superheroes being ‘R rated’? DC teased a new line of comics, that will be darker, grittier as well as independent from the New 52 comic line, staring this Fall with the release of Batman: Damned on September 19th.

5. #DCTV

Ok, discussion time! It is no secret that all of these shows take place in the same universe, the same timeline (aside from Legends of Tomorrow time jumps) and thus such an intertwined set of shows should have a similar theme that binds them together, while still having their own individuality and tone that sets them apart. We start of on August 14th with Green Arrow season 7. Continuing off from last season, we see Oliver in jail doing time therefore repaying his debt to society. The action looks sick as we get to see Green Arrow stripped away from his suit and weaponry, and just going at it with cellmates in EQUAL hand-to-hand combat.

Fast forward to what promises to be an “electrifying” night October 9th with the season 5 premiere of The Flash. We get the subplot of Barry meeting his daughter from the future, who seems to be hiding a dark secret, and the tease of all teases: Flash’s ring! I cannot wait to see this legendary, OG suit up in live-action come this October! The trailer ends with a hooded figure walking in on a newscast of Flash “saving the city again” and he appears to have a black thunderbolt, mirroring that of the Flash’s, and he is maybe gaining some sort of power? To EQUAL him?

Viewers must stay tuned right after as season 2 of Black Lightning will premiere. WB gave us a recap of season 1, as well as a little tease of what we can expect in season 2. This includes Jordan Calloway reprising his role as Painkiller, thus becoming a series regular. We also get to see the main intention of Tobias Whale (played by Krondon) who not only want to kill Black Bolt, but kill him by creating human weapons that are EQUAL in power to him.

The following week on October 14th we get the Season 4 premiere of Supergirl. We get a slight recap of what season 3 gave us, as well as a tease at season 4! This includes Agent Liberty and a brand spanking new look for Supergirl! Are action figures at Wal-Mart still a thing? Because I waaaaannnnnt!!! There is also a Civil War/BvS theme of “divided we fall” with whoever’s narrating the trailer, as he says, “Superheroes take our jobs, our cities, our homes.” Sounds like he’s a little jealous and wants to be EQUAL.

Finally, the month of October premieres ends on October 22nd with the Season 4 trailer of Legends of Tomorrow. Our heroes appear to be in a medieval fantasy setting with unicorns, knights, and dragons. The DC monster geek Constantine is also in this season, and the LOT are welcoming him with open arms, as their EQUAL. They say he’s a misfit with weird powers and that’s what the team is all about.

Real talk, it grinds my gears when people say superheroes are pure fiction, and have no relation to the real world. If you are 7 y/o, yes you are correct. But as you get older you need to open your mind and look at things with discretion! Make connections, look for the hidden message! This season of DCTV has the occurring theme of equality, something that is lacking in today’s world for sure!

THIS. IS. AWESOME. The first Fantastic Beasts movie was amazing, and this next entry looks even better! We get some nostalgic elements from the Potter series such as the Mirror Erised, Boggart class and the Elder Wand! This trailer revealed a lot for hype and to know what we’re getting into, but enough to put money aside for pre-show ticket sales. We find out Gellert Grindelwald’s intention and motives (apart from collecting the Deathly Hallows), Newt’s part in Dumbledore’s story, and the strong bond and  relationship between the two. It also seems that this new series of films is taking a page from the Potter series by getting a tad darker, but more magical in each entry. November 16th cannot come any sooner!

All hail the King! I guess the title of ‘king’ is free for all since Kong: Skull Island dropped it, but hey, whatever sells! This movie looks like a promising 3rd act in WB/Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse. The premise is stated as, “an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.” I just hope we actually get to see A LOT more Godzilla *ahem* the KING as opposed to his last, disappointingly brief outing in 2014.

Alright, as promised this won’t be all about DC and WB, so now it’s time to shine the spotlight on other big announcement that got nerds excited. Created by Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA, Cut Throat City is s heist film that stars Shameik Moore, TI, Wesley Snipes, Terrence Howard, Kat Graham, Isiah Washington, and Denzel Whitaker, on top of others. Yes, that sentence is literally what’s going on here. What more could you want?! We already know this soundtrack is going to be killer and Oscar worthy, and we want Wu-Tang in their, as well as a cameo in the movie!

For fans of the Purge film series, USA has a special treat for you this Fall, no trick! The Purge is coming to television sets everywhere! Do we deserve this? Probably, probably not, but who cares! The night were all crime is legal is getting a tv series, and season 1 is going to be 10 episodes long! It all kicks off after Labour Day on September 4th.

You know a tv series is going to be great when it only takes 47 seconds to sell. Netflix’s The Dragon Prince tells the story of “two human princes who forge an unlikely bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands.” Written by Aaron Ehasz (Avatar: The Last Airbender) and co-created by Justin Richmond, this series looks like one that can be enjoyed by all ages for fans of any type of show! Available for streaming on September 14th.

Wow. Just… WOW! Disenchantment is about an alcoholic princess named Bean,  her elf companion Elfo, and her “personal demon” Luci taking part in the day-to-day quests and adventures in their hometown Dreamland. This show looks like it’s going to be a fun time for the mature television viewing demographic, as it appears to be Futurama/Simpsons meets Game of Thrones and Adventure Time. Matt Groening even said himself in an interview with IGN, “The most important thing to know about this… it’s going to be really funny!” In Matt we trust! He’s tackled The Simpsons which takes place in present day, and Futurama which takes place in the future, now we are interested to see his take on the past, with the series being set in the medieval ages. Available for streaming on August 17th.
